Melinda

A silent and lonely figure paced up and down the halls of the old Academy of Music, her thoughts straying to random things of her past life, before she had to go out on her own and survive. She used to come here, Melinda did, as a student, and a gifted one at that. Her parents forced her to play the piano, and as much as she hated the instrument, she loved the sound. The flowing notes, the harmonic duets... her friends envied her of the music she could produce from her fingers. But that was the past, and most of her friends were dead now, or at least on the run from the brain eaters that crawled along the bare streets.
Melinda's greenish gray eyes shot up when she noticed her feet carrying her toward an old class room. When she got to the door, labeled "Piano Class, Number 5", she paused, her hand reaching out to the door nob. A bang behind her sent her whirling around, her wavy black hair bouncing. From her back she pulled a gun, pointed at the place where she had heard the noise. She stopped the moment she caught sight of what, more like who, it was.
A fluffy black cat with bright green eyes sat there, staring up at her. Melinda closed her eyes, releasing her breath and putting her gun back into her backpack. That black cat had been following her for the last couple of days. Yes, he'd been a good look out, but when ever he felt like scaring her, she'd nearly shoot him. She considered her had a death wish.
"Scared me again, you stupid cat. One of these day's you're going to get shot." Melinda's sighed, walking carefully over to the cat, bending down and patting it's head. She had considered naming it, but she didn't want to grow attached. After all, the cat left when it pleased. Giving it a name would be taking away it's freedom. Besides, what would she name it? She had always been terrible at naming things. Emerald? Grassy? Shinny? Moony? Hmm... Moony, that wasn't a bad one.
"You like the name Moony?" Melinda asked as the tom cat rubbed his fluffy cheek against the side of her hand. He let out a soft mew in answer. She took it for a yes and stood up, looking down the halls. Where was everyone?
